What Should I Wear to a Wedding? An Outfit Decision Guide

Follow the dress code on the invitation first, then match the venue, season, and time of day. For many semi-formal weddings, a cocktail-length dress, tailored separates, or a suit will be appropriate. Avoid an outfit that could be mistaken for bridal attire.

Read the invitation for the actual rules

Black tie generally calls for formal eveningwear such as a tuxedo or floor-length gown. Cocktail or semi-formal usually means a suit or polished dress or separates. Casual does not mean gym clothes; it still means dressed for a celebration.

When the invitation gives no dress code, look at the venue and time. A formal ballroom evening event often demands more polish than an afternoon garden ceremony. If unsure, ask the hosts.

Pick an outfit you can actually wear all day

For an evening indoor wedding, a dark or mid-tone suit with an appropriate shirt or a dressy midi-length look are versatile starting points. For a daytime garden wedding, lighter fabrics and a comfortable heel, wedge, loafer, or dress flat can be easier on uneven ground.

For outdoor events, test footwear on grass, gravel, or sand. Consider a light layer for changing temperatures. Make sure you can sit, stand, walk, and dance comfortably.

Color, fabric, and finishing touches

Unless the couple requests otherwise, guests typically avoid white and shades that photograph like bridal white. Follow any cultural or religious expectations specified by the hosts.

Keep accessories intentional. One focal piece and a balanced outfit work better than several competing accents. Iron or steam the outfit ahead of time and check how it looks in different lighting.

A three-question outfit test

Does it meet the stated dress code? Does it fit the venue and forecast? Can you stay comfortable from the ceremony through the reception? If the answer is yes to all three, you can stop shopping.

If you already own a polished outfit, consider changing the shoes or accessories instead of buying a new one. The best wedding look is not necessarily the most expensive.
